1 Meta - Preferences and Multiple Selves

چکیده

A growing literature in economics and philosophy seeks to explain human choice in terms of either multiple selves or multiple layers of preferences, with the intent of explaining anomalies such as self-constraining behavior and time inconsistency. This article challenges the value of such models. While they do not pose unavoidable logical contradictions, they do pose analytical difficulties that cast doubt on their plausibility. They add superfluous layers of modeling complexity. They also err by trying to identify the “self” and its preferences with specific, narrow aspects of a person’s thought. A simpler and more fruitful approach associates selfhood and preferences with the process by which the many aspects of a person’s thought interact. This process will necessarily involve the dynamic discovery and creation of preferences over time.

Rationalizing Choice with Multi-Self Models

This paper shows that in situations in which the preferences of multiple selves are aggregated into a collective decision, even if the researcher has a fully specified theory of how preferences get aggregated, there are typically no testable implications of the theory unless there is an a priori restriction on the number of selves. This result has implications in both interpersonal and intraper...

Internalities and paternalism: applying the compensation criterion to multiple selves across time

One reason to call an activity a vice and suppress it is that it reduces a person’s future happiness more than it increases his present happiness. Gruber & Koszegi (2001) show how a vice tax can increase a person’s welfare in a model of multiple selves with hyperbolic preferences across time. An interself analogy of the compensation criterion can justify a vice ban whether preferences are hyper...

This paper characterizes ambiguity averse preferences in the absence of the completeness axiom. We axiomatize multiple selves versions of some of the most important ex...

Quantum Type Indeterminacy in Dynamic Decision-Making: Self-Control through Identity Management

The Type Indeterminacy model is a theoretical framework that uses some elements of quantum formalism to model the constructive preference perspective suggested by Kahneman and Tversky. In a dynamic decision context, type indeterminacy induces a game with multiple selves associated with a state transition process. We define a Markov perfect equilibrium among the selves with individual identity (...
